Ghost of Yōtei is an upcoming action adventure game set to become one of the most exciting PS5 exclusives of 2025. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the title serves as a standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima (2020) and will officially launch worldwide on October 2, 2025.
The story unfolds in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) during the year 1603, introducing a new protagonist, Atsu. Once a wandering mercenary, Atsu transforms into a vengeful spirit seeking justice against the Yōtei Six, a group of masked outlaws responsible for her family’s tragic fate.
Unlike its predecessor, Ghost of Yōtei expands the open world with snow-covered landscapes, wide grasslands, and striking auroras, creating an immersive backdrop for both combat and exploration. Players will no longer rely on simple fast-travel but instead set up campsites to move across the land, adding realism and strategy to progression.
Combat has also evolved. Alongside the katana, players can wield spears, dual blades, kusarigama, and odachi, while ranged options like bows, rifles, bombs, and kunai expand tactical variety. This deeper combat system builds on the foundations of Ghost of Tsushima while offering a fresh standalone experience.
For fans of cinematic presentation, Ghost of Yōtei includes the classic Kurosawa Mode and introduces two new visual styles inspired by Japanese film and anime culture. This artistic direction ensures every battle and every scene feels like a living piece of cinema.
The excitement does not end with the main story. In 2026, a free multiplayer mode called Ghost of Yōtei: Legends will be added, featuring two-player co-op missions and four-player survival challenges against supernatural enemies.
Sony has also confirmed special editions and themed hardware for collectors. Players can choose between the Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Edition, which includes exclusive in-game content and physical items such as a life-sized Ghost mask. Limited-edition PS5 consoles and DualSense controllers designed with Japanese artistic details will also be available.
With its gripping story, expanded combat, breathtaking environments, and next-generation visuals, Ghost of Yōtei is on track to be one of the best PS5 games of 2025 and a must-play for fans of samurai-inspired adventures.
